Diabetes Management

11 million Canadians are living with diabetes or pre-diabetes. When left untreated or poorly managed, diabetes can lead to serious complications including heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, amputations and erectile dysfunction.

When should I be screened for diabetes?

Screening for diabetes is recommended for healthy men and women age 40 years and older. Depending on your medical and family history, screening may be warranted sooner. If you have concerns regarding symptoms of diabetes please contact the office for an appointment.

What should I expect during a diabetes assessment?

Diabetic patient's are followed in the office approximately every 3 months. Each visit provides an opportunity to review blood work done prior to your visit,  and assess your blood sugar readings for the past 3 months. Additionally, at each visit you will be screened for any complications of diabetes. If you have concerns for your diabetes prior to your appointment please contact the office to be seen sooner. 

What additional services am I eligible for with diabetes?

All diabetic patients are eligible for OHIP covered eye assessments on an annual basis by an optometrist (no referral necessary). Diabetic patients are eligible for OHIP covered foot care service at certain clinics.
